Save the Date – a New Era of Blue Enlightenment

Together with the EU Member States, efforts to develop scientific cooperation in the South and Tropical Atlantic and in the Southern Ocean have been ongoing for the last years.

In this context, Commissioner Carlos Moedas had the pleasure of co-signing bilateral Declarations of Intent on Marine Research with Brazil in November 2015, and with South Africa in October 2016. To mark and celebrate all these achievements, Commissioner Moedas will host a High-Level Ministerial event from 12-14 July 2017 in Lisbon, Portugal to celebrate the launch of the South Atlantic Research and Innovation Flagship Initiative between the European Union, Brazil and South Africa. This event will bring together key political leaders and stakeholders from Europe, as well as from Brazil and South Africa.

It is envisaged that on 13 July, Commissioner Moedas will co-sign on behalf of the European Union, with members from the Governments of Brazil and South Africa a Statement on Atlantic Research and Innovation Cooperation in the Belém Tower. The Belém Tower bears testimony to some of the first Atlantic voyages, and marks where many Portuguese explorers, including Vasco de Gama, set sail to discover a large part of the world. The signing of a Statement at the Belém Tower will mark the new era of Blue Enlightenment we are now entering, and proves a fitting setting to celebrate our South Atlantic cooperation.

Participants will enjoy a blend of plenaries, panel discussions, inspirational keynotes and a showcase of EU funded projects and national initiatives in the beautiful surroundings of the Champalimaud Foundation Congress Centre and the Belém Tower. Over the course of the event, key political leaders and stakeholders from Europe, as well as from Brazil and South Africa will discuss interactively on, among others:

  • climate and ecosystem approaches;
  • earth and ocean observation and forecasting systems;
  • food security, fisheries management and aquaculture;
  • ocean technology; and
  • Polar research (especially interconnections between the Atlantic and Antarctica).

A showcase of projects and initiatives aimed at the Atlantic basin will also take place during the event.

Mark this date in your agenda so that you do not miss that chance to join us as we enter the New Era of Blue Enlightenment.
