The objective of the Governance & Coordination work package is to put in place an effective, efficient and responsive structure for the coordination and support action to ensure an open and engaged dialogue at all times with the EC Directorate of Research & Innovation, and therefore to the Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance (AORA). There is an Action Coordinator and a dedicated Secretariat with a full-time Action Manager and a full-time Administrative Assistant as well Work Package Leaders for the research and underpinning support themes – this comprises the AORA-CSA Management Team. A High Level Advisory Board provides an advisory function and consists of recognised high level individuals within the wider Atlantic Administrative, Research and Scientific communities.
This work package is led by Dr. Peter Heffernan, CEO of the Marine Institute Ireland and an instigator of the Galway Conference “ The Atlantic – A Shared Resource ” (May 2013) which resulted in the Galway Statement on trans-Atlantic Research Cooperation and the establishment of the Canadian-EU-USA Atlantic Ocean Research Alliance. The Marine Institute covers a number of areas, Marine Environment and Health Services, Fisheries Science Services, Oceanographic Science Services, Aquaculture and Catchment Management Services, Irish Maritime Development Office, Strategic Planning and Development Services, and Corporate Services. Dr. Margaret Rae and Ms. Patricia Killian make up the Secretariat directing the Coordination Support Action on a daily basis. Dr. Rae has over 20 years’ experience in different organisations, project management has been a significant feature in her experience; seven years of which were spent in the Irish Beaufort Marine Biodiscovery Research Programme. Ms. Killian has a wealth of experience in public administration, organisation of events and dissemination of information.
